A friend of mine played me Steve Reich’s ‘Desert Music’ one evening. It was mesmerizing. We listened to the whole thing. Totally mind-blowing it was.

I'm working today on an education piece and I want to notate the fingering, pitch, fret location and phrasing. I'm trying to make it look clear, so I'm putting the phrasing on the staff with the pitches, tab underneath, and below that is the fingering. For any specific picking things I put that in as a when it's needed.

Is it clear? Do you think there's a clearer way to notate all that?

What do you think?

Got this great idea for a TV show. You do stuff like make a cake, or build a wall, whatever. Something cretinously easy that takes no skill whatsoever. I mean, how hard can it be to make a cake? So, anyway, you make your cake, but then, here's the good bit, we turn you into a master cake-maker. We throw money at you to promote your cake making skills. And you become a big deal on the cake making circuit. I'll take 80% of what you make, cake and all.

My lovely wife has just put her orchestral soundtrack to the film The Battle of the Somme on Bandcamp.
Part 1 by Laura Rossi

The film shows footage from the First World War; and, when it was released in 1916, almost half the population watched it. It's an amazing, important film.

For part of her research we went to visit the Somme battlefields. I was chauffeur and chief map reader. Just before we went, Laura's aunt mentioned that her Great-Uncle was at the Somme and she had his diaries from that time. It turned out he was positioned right by where we were staying on the Somme. He was a stretcher-bearer and attended the 29th division (they appear in the film) on July 1st 1916, so it's possible he could even be in the film. Here's an extract from his diary that dates from the first day of the Battle.
